What to Expect

The Landscape of Punta Pitt:

Your journey begins with a wet landing onto a striking golden olivine sand beach, where a noisy bachelor colony of Galápagos sea lions eagerly greets you. From the shore, you will embark on a rewarding hike winding up through dramatic volcanic tuff formations. As you ascend the rocky terrain, the environment transitions from dry coastal vegetation to sweeping, alien-like volcanic landscapes, culminating in high clifftop viewpoints that offer stunning panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean.

Unmatched Birdwatching & Wildlife:

Punta Pitt is world-renowned as the only location in the Galápagos where all three species of boobies nest in the exact same area. Along the trails, you will get close-up views of blue-footed boobies, which prefer open spots and can often be seen doing their quirky, high-stepping courtship dances directly on the interior flat ground of the trail. Nearby, the smaller and scarcer red-footed boobies are easily spotted perched on the branches of bushes and low trees, showing off their distinct blue-tinted beaks. Along the steep cliff edges, the larger Nazca boobies nest in the rocky terrain, recognizable by their sharp black masks and white plumage.

Sharing the low shrubbery with the boobies are colonies of nesting Magnificent and Great frigatebirds. You will get a front-row seat to their fascinating breeding behaviors, where males congregate in groups, spread their wings, and inflate their vibrant, balloon-like red throat pouches to the size of a football to attract passing females. Once a pair bonds, they construct flimsy twig nests right in the low trees and bushes, raising a single chick together. Because they steal nesting materials from neighbors, you will often see them aggressively guarding their nests or performing dramatic aerial maneuvers to snatch twigs in mid-air.

As you explore the arid interior, keep an eye out for endemic San Cristóbal mockingbirds, Darwin’s finches flitting between cactus pads, colorful lava lizards sunning on the rocks, and pairs of gentle Galápagos doves foraging along the path.

Itinerary

Departure

Meet you guide and group at the i-Galapagos HQ then we will make our way to the Tourist pier to catch a water taxi to our boat. After a short briefing we will depart the bay and make our way to Punta Pitt

The Journey

As we cruise along the northern coastline of San Cristóbal, we pass iconic landmarks and pristine beaches, including Cerro Tijeretas, Ochoa Beach, and the dramatic 500-foot volcanic walls of Kicker Rock. Continuing past the white sands of Cerro Brujo, Bahía Rosa Blanca, and Sardine Bay, the open ocean teams with life. Keep your eyes on the horizon to spot frigatebirds, blue-footed boobies, and Nazca boobies soaring overhead, while playful Galápagos sea lions, sea turtles, and occasionally dolphins or manta rays surf the waves alongside the boat.

Punta Pitt

As the boat enters the beautiful bay, we pass right by Pitt Islet, which is thriving with active birdlife and home to a lively sea lion colony. We will then make a wet landing via our tender zodiac directly onto a unique beach composed of sparkling olivine and silica sand, stepping into the shallow, clear water to reach the shore and prepare for our land adventure.

Hike

From the beach, we begin a rewarding, approximately two-hour hike ascending the steep trails up the volcanic tuff formations of Punta Pitt. As we reach the plateau, we enter the only site in the entire archipelago where you can observe all three species of boobies—blue-footed, red-footed, and Nazca boobies—nesting together in the exact same area. Alongside the boobies, you will also see magnificent frigatebirds nesting in the low brush. After taking in the sweeping clifftop ocean views and capturing incredible wildlife photography, we will make our way back down the trail to return to the boat.
